Hilbay tells gov't: Treat arbitral ruling on West PH Sea as 'trophy'

MANILA - Former Solicitor General and senatorial aspirant Florin Hilbay on Tuesday said the government should "treat as a trophy" the international tribunal ruling recognizing Manila's rights in the West Philippine Sea.

Hilbay also called on government to protect the country's interest in handling its dispute with Beijing since he believes majority of Filipinos are disappointed with how government is dealing with the situation.

"We must see the award as a trophy, also a key. I think by winning the case we were able to tell entire world we want a rules-based approach to problems, not a forced-based approach," Hilbay told ANC's Beyond Politics.

Hilbay, who is running in the Senate slate of the opposition coalition for the May 2019 elections, also revealed that the government's plan for charter change pushed him to seek a seat in the Senate.

"This might be the last opportunity to save the 1987 Constitution. The biggest arc of the current administration is cha-cha. The Senate is major stumbling block the way it is," he said.

"If you allow the administration to fully control senate then you might be able to see extension of this administration for the next 20 years."
