MANILA -- Fire razed 10 classrooms at Tayud Elementary School in Cebu early Sunday.
Security guard Joel Serdimo was alerted to the the fire at 12:40 a.m. after hearing loud noises from the back portion of the school where Grades 3 and 5 classes are held.
According to initial investigation by the Consolacion fire station, the blaze may have started from appliances which were left plugged after a dance contest and the report card distribution on Saturday.
The fire spread immediately because the classrooms were made of light materials, damaging P150,000 worth of teaching materials and school furniture, investigators added.
School authorities said the affected classrooms were due for demolition as another building was set to be built in their place.
But required construction documents have yet to be released and school officials are now faced with the problem of finding alternative learning spaces for students whose classrooms were razed.
