MANILA - Malacañang said Tuesday that Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III is handling the abduction of at least 11 overseas Filipino workers in West Africa.

“We are concerned about the kidnapping and Secretary Bello is handling it,” Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo, who admitted to not having been informed about the incident, said in a press briefing.

Two Filipino seafarers were kidnapped by suspected pirates "somewhere in Togo," according to a report sent by the Philippine Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, while 9 Filipino seafarers were abducted by suspected pirates in Benin.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the Philippine government is tracking the development in the cases to ensure the safety and security of the kidnapped seafarers.
