MANILA — A low pressure area or brewing storm off the country's Pacific coast may slam into eastern Luzon or Visayas this week, the state weather bureau said Monday.

The weather system was located 1,210 kilometers east of southern Luzon at 4 a.m Monday. It could enter the Philippine area of responsibility in 12 to 24 hours and intensify into a storm in 1 to 2 days, said PAGASA weather specialist Loriedin De La Cruz.

The storm, the country's 18th this year, is likely to hit land, she said.

The trough or extension of the low pressure area will bring cloudy skies and scattered rains on Monday, potentially spawning floods or landslides in Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region and Aurora, said the weather agency.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience localized thunderstorms, it said.
