ILOCOS SUR – Thirty-three-year-old Paul Mark Paz Pilar is elated over what he described as the biggest surprise in his life so far.

He topped the Midwife Licensure Examination given this month with a rating of 88.8%. Pilar was one of 3,360 examinees; only 1,444 passed the test.

“Masaya ang pakiramdam pero parang hindi pa nag-sink in sa akin na ako ang topnotcher kasi ang iniisip ko dati is hindi ako makakapasa, kaya ang ipinagdadasal ko before the exam ay pumasa man lang ako,” Pilar said.

Pilar is a registered nurse who is currently teaching minor subjects at Ilocos Sur Community College. While teaching, he decided to enroll several units in the midwifery program as a scholar of the school and graduated last March.

"Ang inisip ko ay ibalik ko yung tiwala nila na pinag-aral nila ako and at the same time binigyan ng chance na makapagturo, tutulungan ko din mga estudyante namin sa review para pumasa sa mga susunod na exam," Pilar added.

The school administration and its students are very proud of Pilar’s achievement.

For some of Pilar's students, he is an inspiration because despite his many responsibilities as a teacher, a family man and a student, he was able to balance his time and top the board examination.

The Professional Regulation Commission announced Wednesday that 1,444 out of 3,360 passed the Midwife Licensure Examination given this month.
