The province of Cagayan was placed under a state of calamity on Friday due to severe flooding in the region.

In a resolution passed by the provincial board, Cagayan was authorized to use local disaster funds for immediate relief and rehabilitation of damage caused by flooding.

According to the Office of Civil Defense, almost 12 towns in northern Cagayan were submerged in floodwaters after several days of torrential rains.

The number of affected residents has reached at least 4,760 families or 20,152 individuals.

Local disaster officials earlier reported that 3 people died due to drowning, and another was killed by a landslide. Ongoing search and retrieval operations have started to locate a resident who reportedly drowned in Peñablanca town.

Several roads and bridges are still impassable as floodwaters remain high.
