MANILA - Newly-appointed Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Thursday he wants to be a "consensus-builder" as he begins to work as part of the executive branch.
Nograles said being a Cabinet secretary, he needs to make sure that everybody is moving forward as one team despite possible differences of ideas and opinion.
"The Office of the Cabinet Secretary it entails a lot of consensus-building. Getting everybody onboard, getting everybody to agree on something," he told ANC.
He said it helps that he has good working relationships with the Cabinet members whom he also assisted during the campaign for President Rodrigo Duterte way back in the 2016 polls.
"I want to be the one who makes sure that everybody works hard, we all move forward in one direction and we all help the president in making it happen for the country," Nograles said.
A three-term representative of Davao City, Nograles vacated his position at the House when he took his oath as President Duterte's Cabinet Secretary last Monday, replacing Leoncio Evasco Jr.
As chairman of the House committee on appropriations, Nograles defended the executive department's proposed 2019 budget which was marked by a 2-day impasse.
He was supposed to run for senator in the 2019 midterm polls but later dropped his bid, saying he would rather support the senatorial bets coming from Mindanao.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Nograles was chosen because he "enjoys the trust and confidence of the appointing power."
The Nograles and Duterte families had around 30 years of political rivalry in Davao City but the clans reconciled in 2015 when then-Mayor Duterte ran for president.
