DAVAO DEL SUR - A man shot a barangay kagawad who complained of a foul-smelling canal in Sitio Isum, barangay Inawayan, Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur on Sunday evening, police said.

The suspect, Angelito Cobarde, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he trespassed into the house of barangay councilor Danilo Artiaga Baquial Sr. and shot him in the face and torso using a homemade gun after a heated argument.

Virgie Bulaybulay, Cobarde's live-in partner, said Baquial and his wife complained about their foul-smelling canal.

"Nanimaho lagi daw ilang kanal unya niingon ko na ayaw na ka-problema ana kay amo man ng limpyuhon ron kay gatubod man ng tubig," she said, referring to the waste from chicken's internal parts thrown into the canal.

(They told us that our canal stinks, but I told them there's nothing to worry as we will clean it since there is enough water.)

Baquial was brought to the Davao Doctor's Hospital for treatment. He is now out of danger, police said.

Cobarde was also brought to a nearby clinic after he was mauled by residents.

He will face a frustrated murder case, police said.
