The town of Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, has called for the rehabilitation of a watchtower in Barangay Puyupuyan that was built during the Spanish colonial period.

The structure was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum in 2015, according to municipal tourism officer Jan Dancel.

"We will be tapping the National Museum at sila na ang bahala siguro para gumawa ng paraan para kung ano ang dapat gawin since sila ang may nakakaalam sa mga national cultural treasure na ganito," he said.

“We are very optimistic na sana masimulan na kasi this is a big development o malaking contribution sa Pasuquin.”

The local government has cleared shrubs and vegetation around the watchtower's perimeter.

According to local historians, the watchtower was built by the Spaniards to serve as an outpost for sentinels tasked to warn residents of pirates.
