MANILA (UPDATED) — Police arrested 8 suspected Chinese members of a loan shark syndicate and their Filipino driver after allegedly attempting to abduct a man at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Friday, its manager said.
Patrolling officers at NAIA Terminal 3 caught the suspects allegedly forcing into a van Chinese national Zenglin Zhou, said Manila International Airport Authority general manager Ed Monreal.
In his affidavit, Zhou said the suspects "beat me and burned my arm with cigarettes" because he owed them P30,000 for his visa, which the group denied.
The suspects were turned over to the police anti-kidnapping group.
The Philippines has seen a spike in the arrival of Chinese tourists and workers since President Rodrigo Duterte came to power in mid-2016 and immediately set about warming relations with Beijing.
The influx has had a mixed impact in the Philippines, with authorities suspecting many of the arrivals are working illegally in the online gambling industry. - Report from Raoul Esperas, ABS-CBN News
