MANILA — A third powerful earthquake that jolted Mindanao this month will not spawn a tsunami, the state seismology office said Thursday, as it warned the public to expect aftershocks.

The magnitude 6.5 earthquake cracked roads and destroyed buildings when it struck past 9 a.m. in Tulunan, North Cotabato, the same general area of the previous 2 earthquakes. At least 5 were killed in Tuesday's earthquake.

"There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines," Phivolcs said in a statement.

Thursday's tectonic quake will spawn aftershocks, added Phivolcs science research specialist Mary Montion.

"Sa ganito po kalaking earthquake, i-expect na po natin na marami tayong mararamdamang aftershocks," she told radio DZMM.

The latest aftershocks in Cotabato measured magnitudes 3.2 and 3.5, as of this posting, according to the Phivolcs website.
