ITOGON, Benguet - Residents in this highland town held a folk ritual to pray for safety on Tuesday morning as typhoon Rosita neared, threatening to unleash landslides and floods.
Rosita hit Luzon a month after typoon Ompong ravaged the same areas, swamping farmlands in triggering landslides that killed at least 75, including dozens of miners in Itogon.
As tribal music played in the background, residents of Itogon's Barangay Ampucao sacrificed 10 pigs in the hope that Rosita would weaken.
The state weather bureau placed Benguet and 6 other areas under storm signal 3, which means residents could expect winds of 121 to 170 kilometers per hour.
Heavy rains lashed Baguio City on Tuesday morning, reducing road visibility.
Rosita was spotted in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya at 10 a.m., packing 140 kph maximum sustained winds and 230 kph gusts, said PAGASA. It will head to Benguet, La Union and Pangasinan.
