MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte honored Monday outgoing Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua in a ceremony in Malacañang.

Duterte conferred on Zhao the Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Datu and wished the Chinese envoy good luck in his next assignment.

The Order of Sikatuna is an order of diplomatic merit conferred upon individuals who have rendered exceptional services to the Philippines.

Malacañang, in a statement, said the President also thanked Zhao "for his vital role in a growing and more robust bilateral relationship between the Philippines and China."

Zhao became Beijing's envoy to Manila in 2014. Prior to being assigned in the Philippines, he was China's ambassador to Liberia from 2010 to 2013.
