MANILA - Police arrested 5 people on Sunday who allegedly perform dental procedures without a professional license. The suspects were arrested in 5 clinics in Pasay City and Parañaque City.

All were caught in the act of administering dental procedures on people who posed as patients. The suspects, however, failed to show their credentials when asked by police operatives.

Authorities recovered from the suspects several dental materials, like face masks and boxes of assorted elastics, ortho brackets, mouth retractors and ortho wires, among others.

“Sa pangangailangan din po ng mga anak ko kaya napilitan akong magtrabaho,” said one of the suspects, who is a dentistry graduate but failed the board exams.

(I needed the money for my children.)

The suspects are facing charges for illegal practice of dentistry, in violation of RA 9484 or the Dental Act of 2000.

“Illegal practice of the profession. Ang pwede lang magpractice ay mga lisensyadong dentista (Only licensed dentists can practice dentistry),” said Atty Rafael Vicente Calinisan, lawyer of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA).

The case stemmed from information received by the PDA of alleged unlicensed dentists performing dental procedures in the said clinics.

“Hindi pa nakakapasa ng board exams at hindi talaga dentista. Mas marami ang mga naka-graduate ng dentistry pero di pa nakapagboard,” said PDA President Dr. Stephen Almonte.

(They haven't passed the board exams and so they are not dentists. There are many graduates of dentistry but have not taken the board exams.)

All five clinics are owned by licensed dentist Dr. Jovita Linggon Baliao, who owns around 20 dental clinics in Metro Manila and Baguio City.

All dental clinics are licensed by the Department of Health, while all dentists and dental technologists must be licensed by the Philippine Regulatory Commission, Almonte said.
