A taxi driver was shot dead in an apparent robbery attempt on a dark street in Happy Valley, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City before dawn Tuesday.
Police identified the victim as Jose Sering Jr., a retired police officer and resident of Barangay Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City.
According to witness Junrey Batiloy, caretaker of a town house near the crime scene, he found Sering already dead inside the taxi.
Police said the victim sustained gunshot wounds on his body and head.
"From afar, all I heard were two gunshots. When I went near the taxi, I saw the man already dead inside," Batiloy said.
Cebu City homicide investigator SPO2 Wetzel Berry said Sering may have been robbed, citing evidence of a struggle inside the taxi.
"Possibly, the victim was shot to death after he resisted the robbers. We saw the victim's bag already opened inside. They tried to get the cop's belongings such as his wallet with cash inside, but to no avail, maybe they felt unnerved," he said.
Police are now looking for three men who fled the scene as persons of interest.
A series of robbery incidents involving taxi drivers have been recorded in the same area.
