More PH universities enter QS Top 500 Universities in Asia list

MANILA - More Philippine universities were included in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Top 500 Universities in Asia.

Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) made its debut in the QS World Universities: Asia 2019. It is currently at 451-500 rank.

University of the Philippines went up three notches from 2018's 75th rank to 72. 

It still leads the country's top universities, followed by Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), and University of Santo Tomas (UST), which all made it to the top 200.

University of San Carlos (USC) is in the 301-350 bracket, while Mapua University is in the 401-450 bracket. Both MSU-IIT and Siliman University are in the 451-500 bracket.

Commission on Higher Education Chairman Prospero de Vera III commended the universities who made it to the list.

"I look forward to more Philippine universities entering the top 500 in the coming years," he said in a statement.

According to De Vera, CHED will soon launch a project that will help Philippine universities to showcase their excellence to the world.

"To further boost the quality and competitiveness of our public and private institutions, the Commission will soon launch a project through its International Affairs Service that will assist Philippine universities to showcase their excellence to the world, promote their internationalization initiatives and increase global reputation through international benchmarking assessment of institutions using internationalization metrics," De Vera added.

The QS Asian University Rankings were compiled based in the following indicators: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty-student ratio (10%), international research network (10%), citations per paper (10%), papers per faculty (5%), staff with Doctorate degrees (5%), international faculty (2.5%), international students (2.5%), inbound exchange (2.5%) and outbound exchange (2.5%).

National University of Singapore is the top university in Asia, followed by the University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University.
