CEBU - Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday paid her last respects to the late Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
The incumbent Pampanga congresswoman, clad in black, also attended a mass presided by Archbishop Jose Palma at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
In his homily, Palma urged the faithful to pray in silence for the late cardinal.
"In silence, there is openness in our hearts. The Cardinal speaks to us," Palma said.
The former president described Vidal as "a man of peace and reconciliation."
Vidal, the fourth Filipino cardinal, died on Oct 18 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86.
During the second EDSA uprising in 2001, Vidal urged then-President Joseph Estrada to step down on allegations of corruption.
Arroyo ascended to the presidency after Estrada's resignation. Vidal would later convince Arroyo to pardon Estrada, who was convicted of plunder.
