The ANC Brief: ‘Unbearable’ spinal pain

President Duterte is in pain. Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:

King in pain
The President cut short his trip to Japan due to “unbearable” back pain after he sustained an injury in a motorcycle fall. He isn’t a spring chicken anymore and officials are quick to say that when it comes to the president’s health, there is nothing to worry about. But the Chief Executive’s health is always a concern for the nation. Meanwhile, he is facing charges when he steps down from office. This early, a group of lawyers is keen on bringing charges against Duterte for human rights violations before local and international courts when his term ends.

Public health at stake
There is a threat that public health services in the country will be thrown into disarray after private hospitals threatened to cut ties with PhilHealth. Hospital administrators are complaining about the agency’s debt to them, but PhilHealth said private hospital claims are “fully paid.” This doesn’t bode well with the impending implementation of the universal health care.

Taps dry
Taps are likely to run dry again in some areas in Metro Manila as Manila Water will implement service interruptions starting Thursday, Oct. 24. The low water level at Angat Dam, which supplies Metro Manila with water, is to blame as the rainy season is coming to an end. The interruption is a bid to avoid a bigger problem with the water supply. The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System called on the public not to waste water. Just this year, Metro Manila residents had to bear with service interruptions implemented by water companies after water levels dipped.

Show cause orders
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued show cause orders for 99 barangays for supposedly failing to clear their roads. DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Dino said barangays officials will be given five days to explain or face suspension.

Style Q&A
