MANILA - (2nd UPDATE) A diaper was caught in one of the MRT-3's power lines, stalling rush hour operations and delaying tens of thousands of commuters Monday morning, a transportation official said.

The MRT, which serves roughly 500,000 passengers daily, was on limited operations due to the incident at the Ayala-EDSA section, Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Cesar Chavez said in a text message to reporters.

Train service stopped from Taft Avenue to Boni Avenue stations and vice versa at 6:16 a.m, according to a service status report. Normal operations resumed at 7:43 a.m.

It was not clear how the diaper got to the power line.

At the Quezon Avenue station, passenger queue reached up to Mother Ignacia Street.

At 8:16 a.m., a southbound train unloaded passengers at the Shaw Boulevard Station after a coach door refused to close.

The train system, which runs through one of Metro Manila's busiest thoroughfares, bogged down about 4 times in the past week.

The government has served notice to MRT service provider Busan Universal Rail Inc. that it will terminate the firm's contract due to chronic service interruptions in the railway.
