MANILA - The lawyer seeking to remove Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is “appearing more and more like a troll” with suggestions such as allowing President Rodrigo Duterte to act as a “special prosecutor” in her impeachment trial, her spokesperson said Monday.
Duterte’s chief legal counsel, Salvador Panelo, earlier described the proposal as “pure nonsense."
Lawyer Lorenzo Gadon was also quoted as saying that his impeachment complaint against Sereno was meant to rid the government of the “yellow virus,” referring to appointees of former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.
"Yung ganyang gawi ni Gadon, he’s becoming, he’s appearing more and more like a troll, yung mga di pina-iisipan na mga ideya," lawyer Josa Deinla, Sereno’s spokesperson, told reporters.
(With Gadon's actions, he's becoming, he's appearing more and more like a troll,
House Justice Committee chairman and Occidental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali distanced himself from Gadon's statements, saying members of his justice committee "go by what is filed before us and we have to act on it as part of our constitutional duty."
Deinla also described as "irrelevant" and "immaterial" Gadon’s plan to request the House justice committee to summon 2 psychologists who examined Sereno when she was applying for the court position.
Sereno was said to have failed the psychological exam. But Deinla said Gadon "himself admitted that psychological incapacity is not a ground for impeachment."
Deinla said Gadon was trying to have Sereno impeached on the basis of her opinions contained in Supreme Court decisions.
“Ang bottom line nya dito, patalsikin kasi iba opinyon mo,” Deinla said. “So sino dito ang talagang sumisira ng checks and balance sa ating gobyerno? Di ba si Gadon?”
(His bottomline is to oust because of differences in opinion. So who is destroying checks and balances in government? Gadon, right?)
