MANILA - President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday paid his last respects to the late former Archbishop of Cebu Ricardo Vidal.
The President visited the late archbishop's wake at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral on October 23, 2017.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma said the President is set to declare a holiday in Cebu on October 26 but has yet to release an official announcement.
Vidal, who served as archbishop of Cebu for nearly three decades, passed away last Wednesday due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86.
Pope Francis earlier offered his condolences to Cebuanos mourning the passing of Cardinal Vidal.
"Deeply saddened to learn of the death of Cardinal Ricardo Vidal, I extend my sincere condolences to you, and to the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebu," the pontiff said.
"Joining with you in expressing profound gratitude for the late Cardinal’s untiring and devoted service to the Church, and for his constant advocacy of dialogue and peace for all the people in the Philippines, I commend his soul to the infinite love and mercy of our heavenly Father."
