MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday declared October 26 a holiday in Cebu province for the burial of the late Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
Proclamation No. 333, signed Monday, declared Thursday as a special non-working holiday in the province of Cebu, including the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu.
"Archbishop Vidal has enjoyed great affection by the people in the Roman Catholic Church and deep respect by the people of other Christian denominations and Islamic faith," the proclamation said.
"It is but fitting to give the people of the Province of Cebu the opportunity to remember, honor and show respect, and join the interment of the late Archbishop Vidal," it added
Vidal and Duterte met in Malacañang during the first days of the latter's presidency.
The late cardinal described Duterte as "simple and easy to talk to."
Vidal, who served as archbishop of Cebu for nearly three decades, passed away on October 18 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86.
Vidal was the oldest of 4 cardinals in the Philippines. The other cardinals are Manila Archbishop Emeritus Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Cardinal Quevedo.
Vidal served as a priest for 61 years, nearly 3 decades of which he served as archbishop of Cebu before he retired in 2011. - with a report from Dharel Placido, ABS-CBN News
