ABS-CBN delivers relief goods to families displaced by the fire that hit Navotas City on Friday. ABS-CBN

Several hours after a massive fire torched 200 houses in Navotas City on Friday, ABS-CBN delivered much-needed aid, including rice, canned goods and clothes to affected families now staying in temporary shelters.

Cristina Abletes, 26, said she woke up to the sound of her neighbors yelling. When she looked out the window, she saw the flames.

“Nakita ko nga po malakas na 'yung apoy,” Abletes said.

(I saw the fire was getting big.)

Abletes said she and her brother scrambled to escape with her 3-week-old twins Martina Luis and Martina Denise.

As she ran with her child to evade the fire, her husband tried to save their belongings but was too late.

With her house razed, Abletes’ temporary home is a small corner at the barangay’s basketball court—the evacuation center for families affected by the fire.

“Kahit wala kaming nalabas na gamit, okay na rin naman po safe naman kami eh,” Abletes said.

(We weren’t able to save any clothes but it’s alright as long as we’re safe.)

In another area of the basketball court, 78-year-old Conchita Tablan sat on the floor nursing her aching hip.

Tablan said she jumped over a wall as she tried to flee during the fire and fell in a ditch.

“Pagbukas po namin ng pinto, nandiyan na sa may pinto namin 'yung sunog,” Tablan said. “Binubutas po nila 'yung pader…Tumalon po ako doon kaya nahulog ako.”

(We opened the door and the flames were right outside our door. They made a hole in the wall… I jumped in and fell.)

Tablan said she was fortunate that a friend went back to get her after she fell.

Some 700 families affected by the fire are now housed at the evacuation center.

Like many others, they barely escaped, most with just the clothes on their back.

Abletes said she is grateful for the relief goods she received and hopes a relocation area would be offered to them.

The Navotas City Social Welfare and Development office said it could provide tents to residents whose homes were destroyed.
