MANILA - Cebu City and the provincial Capitol signed Sunday a compromise agreement seeking to end a 15-year-old land dispute that was triggered by House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's proclamation on socialized housing when she was still president.
Arroyo in 2003 declared parts of Capitol-owned land in Cebu City as socialized housing and offered the property for sale to its illegal occupants.
The provincial government, however, suspended disposing of the lots when a 2004 deadline ended, and refused to accept payments.
Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III and Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña signed a deal allowing 32 hectares of land in Barangay Apas to be sold to residents in the area.
The agreement will be deemed official once signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Arroyo, who attended the deal signing, said she will urge Duterte, her ally, to approve the deal that will allow some 4,000 residents to acquire the government land before the year ends.
