MANILA—President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday berated "rich people" for finding malice in his tendency to kiss women.

"But if I will see that the others who are — the politicians there, ah wala. They don’t understand anything. They wonder why I kiss women because these rich people, p*****-i**, won’t hug you because they are afraid they’ll catch your germs," Duterte said in Bisaya in a speech in Davao City.

"So the city people understand me. If you try to give other people a good laugh and kiss them, the idiots will say, 'Ah vulgar.' "

The President said this is why he prefers to mingle with the masses instead.

"They (The rich) put malice on things that have no malice, because I won’t kiss them. Why would I kiss them? Especially the rich ones, why would I kiss you? What will I get from you? You won’t even vote for me, you idiots. I’ll mingle with the masses instead," he said.

Duterte was heavily criticized for kissing on the lips a Filipina woman in front of hundreds of overseas Filipino workers in Seoul, where the chief executive was on an official visit in June.

He brushed aside criticism and said they both enjoyed it.

The President, who has not been shy to admit his fondness for beautiful women, earlier said he has probably kissed a “thousand ladies” on the lips during his many campaign sorties as long-time Davao City mayor.
