MANILA - Lingayen Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), joined the hundreds of faithful who trooped to Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral to pay their last respects to Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

In a photo from CBCP News, Villegas was seen kissing the coffin of Vidal after a Mass on Friday.

Vidal, the fourth Filipino appointed cardinal, passed away on Wednesday due to complications from penumonia.

Earlier, Villegas and other Filipino clergymen paid tribute to the bishop who served the Cebu archdiocese for nearly three decades.

Pope Francis has also sent his message of condolences to the people of Cebu and praised the late cardinal's "constant advocacy for dialogue and peace for all the people in the Philippines."

Vidal will be laid to rest at the mausoleum at the back of Cebu's cathedral after a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. on October 26.
