MANILA - The United Nations Children's Fund said Thursday it launched a nutrition program for thousands of infants and pregnant women in the Philippines in partnership with the Department of Health.

Under the "Right Start Initiative," some 142,000 children from 6 to 23 months old and 91,000 pregnant women will be given iron folic acid supplement and micronutrient power.

The program, which covers 45 municipalities, is a "significant milestone that contributes to improving the nutritional status of Filipinos – especially the women and vulnerable children," said UNICEF Philippines representative says Lotta Sylwander.

Iron and folic acid deficiency in pregnant women can affect the development of the unborn child, while the mothers are at risk from anemia, UNICEF said.
