4.7 magnitude aftershock jolts parts of Mindanao 2 days after quake

MANILA—A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck North Cotabato late Thursday, Phivolcs said, two days after a 6.3-magnitude tremor hit the province and parts of Mindanao.

The tectonic tremor occurred at 6:56 p.m. approximately 18 kilometers (km) at a depth of 16 km northeast of Tulunan town, where a strong quake first hit.

Tulunan felt Intensity 4, while Kidapawan City, and Matalam town in Cotabato experienced Intensity 3.

Areas that felt instrumental intensities were:

  • Intensity IV - Kidapawan City
  • Intensity III - Koronadal City, South Cotabato; Malungon, Sarangani
  • Intensity II - Tupi, South Cotabato
  • Intensity I -Alabel, Sarangani

Phivolcs said the temblor was an aftershock of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake.

Damage to structures is not expected from the aftershock.

The magnitude-6.3 temblor left 5 dead and over 50 injured, officials confirmed.
