MANILA - Former Interior and Local Government Secretary Rafael Alunan on Wednesday filed his certificate of candidacy for senator, his second try after losing in the 2016 race.

Senator Richard Gordon accompanied Alunan in the filing of his COC. "With his great mind and clean record, he deserves a seat in the Senate. Simulan na ang bagong bayan!" Gordon said in a Twitter post.

Alunan served as DILG chief during President Fidel V. Ramos' term and Tourism Secretary under President Corazon Aquino. He broke his decades-long hiatus from politics to seek a Senate seat in 2016, but failed to make it to the Magic 12.

He was listed as a "friend" of PDP-Laban in the list submitted by party president Sen. Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III to President Rodrigo Duterte.

A September Pulse Asia survey placed Alunan in the 43-61 range, with a 30-percent awareness rate.

His profile in business news agency Bloomberg states that Alunan is the President of the First Philippine Infrastructure Development Corp and an independent director of Pepsi-Cola Products.
