MANILA - Atty. Alfonso J. Ruiz, one of the longest-serving mayors of the Philippines, passed away on Monday, Oct. 14. He was 78.
He became mayor of Sarrat town, Ilocos Norte, at 25 years old, one of the youngest to do so during his time. He held the position for 17 years, his family said.
Ruiz also served as an associate commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration, and head of the Land Registration Authority.
He was also president of the Ilocos Norte Mayors’ League, president of Rotary Club-Quezon City, and a member of the UP College of Law Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity.
The late Ilocos Norte official was the father of former ABS-CBN reporter Jay Ruiz and siblings Dr. Michelle Alcaraz, Judge Alfonso Ruiz II, Sharon Sison, and Francie Calderon.
His wake is at Mapayapa Village II Clubhouse in Quezon City. He will be cremated on Saturday, Oct. 19.
