MANILA - The spokesperson for the committee President Rodrigo Duterte tasked to review the Constitution for a shift to federal government on Tuesday said he would run for senator in next year's election.
Ding Generoso said he would not longer represent the Consultative Committee as he would be filing a certificate of candidacy under the Katipunan Ng Kamalayang Kayumanggi political party later in the day.
"We are making the 2019 elections a platform to advance federalism, system change, and the Puno draft constitution," he said, referring to the final proposal by the committee as headed by former Chief Justice Reynato Puno.
He said his party would be campaigning on this issue alone "so that Filipinos will know the change we need to make this country better."
"We are bringing the Puno draft federal constitution to the polls in line with what the President said in his SONA — that he is confident that 'the people will stand behind us when we bring the draft constitution to them,'" Generoso said in a statement sent to reporters.
The shift to a federal government is a centerpiece measure being advocated by the Duterte government. The consultative committee, which Generoso is a member of, submitted its proposal to the President, who in turn endorsed it to Congress.
