MANILA (UPDATE) - Secretary to the Cabinet Leoncio “Jun” Evasco Jr. will run for governor of Bohol in the 2019 polls.
Evasco confirmed this to ABS-CBN News in a text message Tuesday. He said he already filed his certificate of candidacy.
"I am with deep gratitude to the President for the trust and confidence he has given me for the past 30 years that I worked with him in different hats," Evasco said in a statement.
"I left Malacanang with dignity and confident that my office delivered its mandate the best way we can."
Evasco was a three-term mayor of Maribojoc town before he joined Duterte's Cabinet.
He said if he wins in the polls, "we will take the higher moral ground to push for meaningful change and equitable development for the island we hold dear in our hearts."
Evasco, 72, was campaign manager of Duterte and was initially offered the post of secretary of Department of the Interior and Local Government, which he turned down.
He started working for Duterte in Davao City in 1989. He served as Duterte's chief of staff from 1998 to 2004 and was Officer-in-Charge of the Davao City Engineer's Office from 2004 to 2007.
In Malacañang, he headed the National Food Authority Council, leaving him the daunting task of managing the flow of rice in the country, before the leadership of the inter-agency council was brought back by the President to the agriculture department.
