MANILA - (UPDATE) Seven alleged terrorists linked to the "Red October" plot to remove President Rodrigo Duterte from office this month have been arrested, the police and military said Tuesday.
Among those nabbed in separate operations were 5 high-ranking communist terrorists and 2 leaders of the Maute Group, the security agencies said in a joint statement.
Their fall contributed to the fizzling out of the supposed ouster move against Duterte, AFP Chief of Staff Carlito Galvez Jr. told reporters.
Among those arrested was communist consultant Adelberto Silva, who was released by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016 when he revived peace negotiations with the rebels, a progress report said.
A court in January ordered the re-arrest of Silva and fellow communist leaders, couple Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, after it revoked their temporary liberties.
The military earlier said that the Red October plan has lost steam, but communist rebels were still allegedly plotting destabilization moves for December.
