MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte turned spiritual on Sunday as he credited God for giving him the presidency.
"Ang Diyos ang naglagay sa akin dito," Duterte said in a speech before thousands of Filipinos at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.
The President said he will work in accordance with what God wanted him to do, stating that his winning the presidency was almost a "miracle."
"Ang pagka-presidente ko, almost destiny. It's a miracle to me. He wants me to improve my country, stop corruption and make the lives of the Filipinos comfortable people," Duterte said.
The President is in Brunei Darussalam for a three-day state visit.
During his visit, he is scheduled to meet with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to seek business investments, and assistance in Manila's war on illegal drugs and negotiation efforts with local rebel groups.
From Brunei, Duterte will fly to China on Tuesday and hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in what the Filipino leader dubbed as a "key turning point" for the relations of Manila and Beijing.
