MANILA - Huge waves sank a boat off Zamboanga City and swept away some 60 houses on stilts in several seaside villages Sunday.

About 30 houses each were destroyed along the western and eastern coasts of Zamboanga City, according to initial reports from the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO).

Photos captured by ABS-CBN News show debris and appliances from the destroyed homes floating off the shores of barangays Patalon, Labuan, Maasin, and Vitali.

Floods also swamped some 30 other houses in Vitali, said Zamboanga City Councilor Mike Alavar.

Cellphone video from Vitali resident Xina Cristobal-Ramillano showed a hut tilting on its side as flood waters raged.

A fishing boat meanwhile also sank due to strong waves off Zamboanga's Sta. Cruz island.

The 31 boat passengers floated in the open sea for about 2 hours before they were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard, a survivor said.

Some passengers suffered minor bruises.

Meanwhile, rains were seen in a large part of the country, including Zamboanga peninsula, due to an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), said state weather bureau PAGASA.
