MANILA - Uber, a ridesharing application, is now allowing persons with hearing impairments to be "partner-drivers" in the Philippines.

Through its new feature "Beethoven," persons with hearing impairments can now earn income as Uber drivers.

Drivers will receive visual and auditory cues within the Uber app that will assist them in picking up riders, driving, and navigating to the passengers' preferred destinations.

The program appears to have been named after Ludwig van Beethoven, an iconic composer and pianist, whose popular works were created when he became deaf.

Six in every 1000 household in the Philippines have family members who are deaf and most of them struggle to find work--impacting 120,000 persons in the country.
