MANILA - Ombudsman Samuel Martires has charged Malvar, Batangas Mayor Cristeta Reyes of graft for selling a 5,000 square meter lot owned by her children to the municipal government in 2009.
In the information filed by the Office of the Ombudsman, Reyes allegedly gave unwarranted benefit to her children Katherine, Cynthia Rose, Kristina, Jose Gabriel, and Karina after a P6.65 million payment was processed and released, months before a Deed of Portion Sale was executed.
According to the Ombudsman, the early release of the payment caused damage to the government.
Also included in the charge were then Municipal Treasurer Yolanda Cabiscuelas and Municipal Budget Officer Jeanette Fruelda who supposedly conspired with Reyes in the performance of their administrative and official functions.
The information filed at the Sandiganbayan was first signed by former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales on April 10, 2018 and was approved by Ombudsman Martires.
It took two months before Martires approved the case against Reyes as he ordered a review of all pending investigations at the Office of the Ombudsman including information that were already signed by Carpio but were not filed before she left office.
Martires was appointed by President Duterte on July 26 after Carpio retired on July 25 this year.
