MANILA- The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) announced Friday the extension of the application for chief justice.
The deadline, previously set to Oct. 15, is now Oct. 26.
The search for the next chief justice comes following the retirement of Teresita Leonardo-De Castro as top magistrate last Oct. 8.
De Castro, 69, is the second woman to serve as chief justice and has the shortest term of only 41 days.
She replaced Maria Lourdes Sereno, whose appointment the high court invalidated last May for failure to fully disclose her wealth.
Applicants who will pass the initial screening will then be subject to a public interview.
The council will thereafter deliberate on the qualifications of each applicant and vote on a shortlist of names to be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte, who has to appoint his second Chief Justice appointee 90 days from the day of vacancy (Oct. 8).
