MANILA - Makati Mayor Abigail Binay minced no words when asked to react to recent declarations by her brother Jejomar "Junjun" Binay Jr., who will likely be her toughest rival in the 2019 elections.
The mayor, who is married to Luis Campos, said it was "sexist" for her brother to say that the poll rivalry was a "Binay vs. Campos."
"Noong ipinanganak ako, Binay ako. Mamatay ako, Binay ako. And I find that sexist, napaka-sexist ng remark na 'yan. May karapatan ang isang babae kung gusto ba niyang i-hyphenate, i-adopt o 'wag i-adopt ang apelyido ng asawa niya," Mayor Binay said in an interview with radio DZMM.
(I was born a Binay. I will die a Binay. I find his remark sexist. A woman has the right if she wants her name to be hyphenated, or whether to adopt or not adopt her husband's name.)
"Bakit niya iniiba ang kuwento. Binay versus Binay ito," she added.
(Why is he changing the story. This is a Binay versus Binay fight.)
Should her brother push through with his candidacy, Mayor Binay said she will campaign as usual, using her achievements as mayor as her advantage.
(We siblings know, even Junjun will agree, that I am the bravest among us. That's why I don't look at what my opponent has achieved.)
(It's because I will stand on my own achievements, and not use my opponent's weakness to my advantage. This is why I work hard, because I will bank on my own achievements.)
The lady Binay also claimed that she has her father's blessings to run for reelection.
"Nagkaroon na po ng desisyon, bago po siya umalis ng Rome," she said.
(A decision was made, even before he (Jejomar) left for Rome.)
This is also the reason why she already announced her reelection bid last month, together with his father's plan to run for Congress.
(This is why last September 21, I already announced that I will run [for mayor] again, and I will be joined by my father...I wouldn't have made the announcement if we haven't decided.)
Binay Jr., already knows about their father's decision, Abby claimed.
(Junjun told our father that he will run. Our father said that if he will continue his bid, I [our father] will run with Abby, and I will campaign for Abby.)
Mayor Binay said she was not sure why her brother wanted to become mayor again.
May gusto ba siyang balikan? May gusto ba siyang ipagpatuloy na naudlot noong 2014? Hindi ko alam. Siya lang ang makakasagot niyan," she said.
(Only he can answer why he wants to run for office. Is there something he wants to go back to? Is there something he wants to continue doing? I don't know. Only he can answer that question.)
For Mayor Binay, it would have been better if Junjun told her he was not satisfied with the way she is running Makati City instead of using his dissatisfaction as an excuse to run against her.
Hindi 'yun 'yung serbisyong Binay na hinahanap niya?" she said.
(Are the changes I brought in this administration not enough? Are they not considered part of "serbisyong Binay" that he is looking for?)
According to Junjun, his elder sister destroyed the Binay brand of public service with her supposed refusal to interact with the masses.
(The Binay brand is leading from the bottom to the top. We have to be close to the people.)
The Binay father and son are facing cases over the allegedly anomalous P2.2-billion Makati City Hall building 2 project -- the same issue that led to Junjun's dismissal in 2016.
Senator Nancy Binay on Friday said the Binay family will meet over the weekend to discuss the brewing feud for the Makati City mayoral post.
