MANILA—Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III on Thursday filed his certificate of candidacy for the 2019 midterm polls, seeking re-election.

“Maaga tayo pumunta because I’m getting married next week so gusto ko tapos na ito,” said Pimentel who was among the first senatorial hopefuls who filed his certificate of candidacy.

Measures that would counter inflation, end contractualization, and change the form of government are among “my unfinished business” in the Senate, Pimentel added.

A supermajority elected Pimentel Senate president in 2016. He was replaced by Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III in May this year so he can prepare for his reelection bid.

Pimentel in August 2011 was declared the 12th winning senator in the 2007 elections after a tribunal ruled in his favor in a poll protest against Senator Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri.

Zubiri resigned before the tribunal's ruling as witnesses alleged massive poll fraud in Maguindanao, but he denied allegations that he was involved.

Pimentel, first reelected in 2016, said he can still run in next year's elections, because he did not complete his first term as senator.

“We are very sure with our legal theory,” Pimentel said about the validity of his third consecutive Senate bid.

Pimentel has also been the president of PDP-Laban, President Rodrigo Duterte's political party, which was recently marred with internal conflict after a faction led by lawyer Rogelio Garcia elected its own set of officials without the knowledge of Pimentel and other incumbent leaders.

President Duterte had met the warring factions last August but failed to unite the groups.
