MANILA - Columnist and doctor Willie T. Ong filed his certificate of candidacy Thursday for senator in next year's elections.
Ong, known for his health tips and advice on social media, is running under Lakas-CMD. He said he hopes to continue the legacy of the late senator Juan Flavier, who was also from Lakas-CMD.
If elected senator, he said he will push for free lab tests under Philhealth and cheaper or free medicines.
"These are doable goals but there has to be a doctor in the Senate to push for it," he said.
Ong graduated from De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in Cavite. He specialized in internal medicine and cardiology.
Aside from sharing his medical knowledge on social media, Ong is also a frequent guest in medical shows on radio and television.
Ong is married to Liza Ramoso-Ong, who is also a doctor. They have two daughters.
