The infant who was abandoned at Ninoy Aquino International Airport last year has been adopted by a relative.

The boy was 3 months old when his mother, an arriving passenger from Maco, Davao, left him in the care of a stranger in November.

The mother's sister-in-law, Joy Detros, adopted the boy after the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) began the adoption process in June.

According to the DSWD, Detros was the most qualified among the relatives to apply for custody of the infant after the mother failed to show up at the agency's office to show interest in her child.

Detros underwent a series of counseling sessions after the mother couldn't be tracked down since she left Davao in December.

Detros said the baby is now in her custody and celebrated his first birthday last August 30.

"Maraming salamat po, isa po kayo sa mga taong tumulong para makuha po ang bata at makauwi sa amin," she said.

Detros added that they do not know the current whereabouts of the real mother and her other children.
