backs pension hike, vows better SSS services
MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Dean Amado Valdez of the University of the East (UE) College of Law as the new chairperson of the Social Security System (SSS).
Valdez told ABS-CBN News on Tuesday that he would prioritize studying proposals to increase the monthly pension of the state pension fund for private sector workers.
He said he favored the proposed increase, but the SSS must “think out of the box” to achieve this without going bankrupt.
"‘Yung mga [The] baby boomers, who were responsible for bringing the country to what we are now, nasa retirement age na [are already in retirement age]. We have to take care of them, it’s a social responsibility."
Valdez served as government corporate counsel and member of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) board of trustees from 2001 to 2002.
He was appointed executive director of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) Commission in 2003 and officer-in-charge of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Affairs the following year.
Valdez reassumed in 2005 as dean of the UE College of Law, a post he first held in 2000. Under his leadership, the college provided free legal assistance to indigent residents of Manila.
He hosts the program "Magpayo Nga Kayo" aired every Saturday morning on radio DZMM.
