MANILA - The Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives has called for an investigation into recent landslides in Itogon, Benguet and Naga City, Cebu that left dozens dead and several still missing.
The group filed House Resolution No. 2238 to urge the lower chamber to conduct an investigation, in aid of legislation, on the deaths of at least 61 people in Itogon, Benguet and at least 78 people in Naga, Cebu.
The landslides were triggered by the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong and large-scale mining and quarrying activities in the area.
“Sa tingin namin dapat imbestigahan din ito ng Kongreso dahil 'di simpleng sakuna lang ito triggered by typhoon. Mayroong malalim na usapin dito," Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate said.
(We think Congress should investigate this because this was not a simple incident triggered by a typhoon. There's a deeper issue behind this.)
He cited how small-scale mining was immediately blamed in the Itogon incident while "unbridled quarrying" has long been a complaint in Naga City.
