MANILA - The Philippine National Police said Tuesday the killing of 5 anti-illegal drug agents in Lanao del Sur could be a case of mistaken identity.
PNP spokesperson Benigno Durana said they have already zeroed in on several suspects but refused to divulge their names as they continue their probe.
Durana said the killing of the anti-narcotic agents may also be connected to an earlier encounter that led to the death of a member of a prominent political family in the area.
The police official said it was closely coordinating with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in its probe into the killing of the agents.
Three of the agents killed in the ambush were fresh graduates of the PDEA academy. They were on board a van on their way to Marawi City when there were ambushed.
PNP Chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde earlier said they have in custody all the policemen who were in the agents' convoy during the ambush as they piece together what happened.
