The head of the Department of the Interior and Local Government on Tuesday said he will support the release of a new list of candidates for the 2019 elections who are included in drug lists.
Speaking to reporters, DILG OIC Eduardo Año said the present law that disallows disqualification of candidates who are not facing final conviction on various cases is too strict.
"Masyadong napakataas nung standard. Even yung nakakulong, kahit nakakulong siya kaya pa niyang kumandidato. We will discuss this with the [Commission on Elections]...Ang ayaw lang natin dito ay makatakbo ang mga drug lords," he said.
Año earlier said there are at least 93 local officials included in the drug list of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency. Of these, 58 are mayors.
The DILG official said he is backing the release of a new list of "narco bets" but admitted the PDEA chief is busy investigating the ambush of 5 anti-narcotics agents in Kapai, Lanao del Sur.
He also commended Sen. Koko Pimentel for giving an assurance that the ruling Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) would not include narcopoliticians in their bets for the 2019 elections.
"I hope other political parties would follow suit," Año said.
The DILG is also calling for the disqualification of candidates linked to corruption.
Año said at least 250 mayors are currently under investigation for various corruption and abuse of authority cases.
