TACLOBAN CITY - After almost 4 years of waiting for the government’s assistance, survivors of Typhoon Yolanda can now enjoy the presidential financial assistance worth P5,000.
Through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, more than 200 beneficiaries from Basey, Samar claimed today the long overdue financial assistance.
Marilou Lanigao was among those who patiently waited in the long queue to get the assistance.
“We were at a very difficult situation after the Yolanda [disaster], receiving none from the government is disappointing that time but we have to live,” Lanigao recalls.
She is very thankful now that she was among those who qualified for the financial assistance.
Lanigao plans to use the money to pay for electric connection.
Her family has been living in the relocation site for a year without electricity.
“I will use the money to pay for our electric meter which is P5,500. I still have to look for P500 but it’s okay," she said.
The beneficiaries are among those who signed a petition to be given financial assistance from the government.
“They are those who qualified, based on the listings that were validated and submitted to us through a social civic organization which is the People Surge,” Juel Ramos, Project Development Officer III of DSWD said.
About 41,000 families qualified for the Presidential Assistance which was promised by President Rodrigo Duterte during his visit in Tacloban City last November 2016.
