MANILA - The San Lazaro Hospital here said Friday two patients were confirmed to have meningococcemia.

The patients have been placed in the hospital's isolation room.

Last September, a child with the illness died in Davao City.

Meningococcemia may be transmitted through direct close contact with contaminated individuals or their respiratory discharges. Its contamination is seasonal and occurs mostly during colder months.

The illness, endemic to Asia, may lead to organ failure, severe disability or death.
