MANILA - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday said workers affected by the fire that razed Star City in Pasay will receive employment assistance.
"The labor department is making available P5.5 million in emergency employment assistance to about 500 workers of Star City," the DOLE said in a statement.
The workers will receive help for two months under the program Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers.
The DOLE said those affected have a "no work, no pay" status, and they could be out of the job for 6 months.
The fire that razed Star City on Wednesday left an estimated P1 billion in damage.
It burned down some 80 percent of the park and damaged nearby buildings, including facilities of radio and television network Manila Broadcasting Co.
Besides electric overload, authorities are looking into whether the fire was set deliberately, but park management believes it was unintentional.
The park earlier said it may not be able to open in time for Christmas, a peak season, and estimated that operations could resume in October 2020.
