MANILA - The House of Representatives has approved on second reading a bill seeking to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

House Bill No. 4933 aims to reschedule the May 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections to 2022. The Senate on Monday approved a similar bill on third reading.

House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms Chair Negros Occidental 4th District Rep. Juliet Ferrer, the principal sponsor of the bill, accepted last minute amendments introduced by Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez that made the House version of the bill similar to the Senate version.

The approved Senate bill moves the elections originally scheduled on the second Monday of May 2020 to December 5, 2022.

Subsequent synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections shall be held on the first Monday of December 2025 and every 3 years thereafter.

The terms of the winners shall begin on January 1 following the elections.

The House bill is expected to be approved on third and final reading when the chamber resumes plenary sessions in November.
